She is now in New Zealand (at Gulf Harbour Marina) whilst we are back in Canada working to fill the cruising kitty. We head back to NZ next year to start the next leg of our voyage, sailing for 9 months and ending up in S. Africa.
Fair winds
Cathy and BillCathy and Bill Norriehttp://catherineandwilliamsail.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1274932517551878927.post-88346001365685747702012-05-26T07:58:54.427-07:002012-05-26T07:58:54.427-07:00Hi Karen and Jim,
Our friends Dan and Alice from ...Hi Karen and Jim,

Our friends Dan and Alice from SV Shaula knew we would enjoy reading your blog and gave us the link. We have been enjoying reading your adventures and re-living our time in the Marquesas (just last June!!).

Your wonderful sense of humour comes through so beautifully in your writing - self-deprecating and absolutely a delight to read... thank you!! It brings back memories in such a wonderful way...

When we were anchored in Anaho Bay last year my husband, Bill, was ill for about 10 days so we had a nice long rest there. It meant, however, that I would go off for mini-adventures either by myself or with fellow cruisers (there were only 2 other boats anchored when we were there). One day I decided to go snorkelling over to the coral reef just off the cliff north of where we were anchored. While Bill watched from the cockpit I swam over and was having a lovely time rollicking with the local manta rays when I spotted something else coming out of the murk (the water wasn't very clear near the cliff that day). Yup... it was a very large shark (not sure what kind but it was all brown with a big blunt nose). It was cruising a little bit below and in front of me so I kept very still and then when I saw yet another one of equal size I decided it was time to head home!! Coming from Alberta and knowing my grizzly bear rules (I equate sharks with grizzlies - very unpredictable and get excited when they sense fear/panic). I kept very calm and lazily swam back to the boat, where I think I literally shot out of the water and clambered up our swim ladder sure that there were shark teeth snapping at my heels! Luckily there were not and we didn't see those sharks again (mind you I also did not go snorkelling there again!!). I have a healthy respect for those animals and as much as others find it invigorating to swim with them... I do not! :(

Sorry to be so wordy, but in the words of Mark Twain “I didn't have time to write a short letter, so I wrote a long one instead.”

All the best and both Bill and I are eagerly anticipating your future postings :)

Cathy and BillCathy and Bill Norriehttp://catherineandwilliamsail.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1274932517551878927.post-43007600858994550032012-05-22T18:54:14.405-07:002012-05-22T18:54:14.405-07:00Thanks, everyone! But we are getting eager to head west, so may just go to Controlleur Bay nearby if we don't catch enough rainwater to fill the tanks here in Taiohae.

Raye, if I could post the videos on the blog I would, but it'll have to wait until we get a better connection. You will not believe the shark video I got the other day.

Kaci, no matter what anyone says I will not be going into the water with a whale and a tuba in the same proximity. Nope. Uh-unh, nohow.

Anne, we gave the Zulu crew your message and they say hi. We're anchored again next to them (and Shane just pulled in aboard Clover), so we will see them all tonight. Zulu will be leaving very soon for Hawaii.

As I write this, a 7 foot hammerhead shark is vigorously chasing fish around the boat--third day in a row. Yikes! No swimming today!
KarenKaren Sullivan and Jim Heumannhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04773839137613871820noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1274932517551878927.post-50809735687803275462012-05-18T23:35:52.289-07:002012-05-18T23:35:52.289-07:00Hello Sockdolager! There are several of us back in Seattle who, to feel closer to Zulu and her dear-to-our-hearts crew, have been hanging on your every word about conditions (sea, weather, mental, emotional) all the way across from Baja and through the Marquesas. Thanks for your fun and detailed postings and pics. Best wishes to you for the rest of your journey.
- anneilikefringehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01373612740115598225noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1274932517551878927.post-2889104597098605632012-05-18T14:39:17.184-07:002012-05-18T14:39:17.184-07:00Unless you have info from current boats going to A...Unless you have info from current boats going to Anaho Bay about the water there, I'd stay away from it. We had friends(Periclees) that filled up their tanks there last year and a few days later had green water coming out of their faucets. Had to empty and clean all their tanks.
Maybe it's better this year.S/V Zephyrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06873033240470479511noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1274932517551878927.post-42982024872111626932012-05-18T04:25:42.491-07:002012-05-18T04:25:42.491-07:00Hi Karen! The photos pang the heart with fond memories and with gratitude that so much of the Marquesas (save Daniel's Bay) look the same as they did almost 20 years ago. Laughter trumps voyage envy and of course, I'm happy to the bottom of my soul that you're both enjoying life "out there" so much. You can SEE the sharks in the Tuamotus, so don't give up your tuba and flippers yet:) I finally bookmarked your blog and will try to stop in more often now that you're on the move among the islands again. Your next leg is my favorite in the whole bluewater world! Hugs from Oklahoma and PT. KaciKaci Cronkhitehttp://www.womanofthewind.comnoreply@blogger.com
